FAR WEST LEAGUE STANDINGS
Five TSA teams participated in the Far West Regional League and were competitive with the aforementioned Boys U18 team having an outstanding showing. In the boys division, where there were four teams, the U15 team finished fourth, going 1-3-2.
The U16 team finished 8th (10 teams) by going 3-6. The U17 team finished eighth among nine teams in going 1-7.
The two girls teams competed hard but went 0-5 (U14) and 0-4 (U16).
NICE SHOWING
One of the best performances in the Far West League came from the U15 Boys team. In the final game of the FWRL, the TSA Boys Red team knocked off Albion White, 2-1. At the time, Albion White was ranked No. 2 in the age group. It continues to be ranked there as of the mid-December rankings (Gotsport.com).
“We talked a lot about minimizing our mistakes and in this game we made very few mistakes,’’ coach Charlie Kendrick said of the upset. “We also talked about breaking a game down into 10 ‘key moments’ and winning more moments than the opponent. We achieved that goal. To beat an opponent like Albion, you have to play a very tight game tactically and the boys fully concentrated on the job.’’
NICE SHOWING II
By going 6-1 in the state league’s Division II, the U13 team, coached by Charlie McCabe, will be moving up to the Top Flight division. The success has apparently helped with overall play and confidence. The team finished first in the annual Mesa Patriots Cup.
